How to evaluate B2B marketplaces for export

IndiaMART, TradeIndia, Alibaba and others can bring export enquiries, or eat a membership fee. How to test which works for your product before you commit.

This is not a review. We haven't tested these platforms side by side, so we don't rank them. What works depends on your product and target buyers, and the only reliable test is your own numbers. Here's how to get them.

How marketplaces work

You list your company and products; buyers search, find you and send enquiries. Most platforms offer a free basic listing and paid tiers that improve your ranking, add verification badges or give access to buyer requests. You compete for attention with every other supplier in your category, often on price.

Test before you pay

Start with a free or entry-level listing with complete, accurate product pages. Before upgrading, ask the sales team:

  • How many export enquiries (not domestic) did similar sellers in my category get last month? Ask for evidence, not averages across all categories.
  • Which countries do buyers in my category come from?
  • What exactly does each paid tier add: ranking, verification badge, enquiry volume?
  • Is there a trial, a refund, or a minimum contract length?
  • How are buyers verified, if at all?

Measure enquiry quality, not volume

For four to eight weeks, log every enquiry in a sheet with these columns:

  • Country, and whether it's export or domestic
  • Company name, and whether it's real and buys your category
  • Specific requirement (product, quantity, spec) or vague
  • Replied to your follow-up: yes or no
  • Reached a quotation or sample stage

Decide with numbers

Divide what the platform costs you, in fees plus your team's time, by the number of enquiries that reached quotation stage. That cost per qualified buyer is the number to compare against other channels: trade fairs, council leads and direct outreach.

Using them well

  • Complete product pages: specs, photos, MOQ, lead time and certifications.
  • Reply within hours; buyers send the same enquiry to many suppliers.
  • Screen before sending samples or detailed prices. Our buyer guide has the checks.
  • Treat marketplaces as one channel alongside direct outreach, not the whole plan.

Questions

Which B2B marketplace is best for exporters?

It depends on your product, your target countries and where your buyers actually search. Test with a free or low-cost listing, track the export enquiries you get for a few weeks, and compare cost per qualified buyer rather than trusting general rankings.

Are marketplace enquiries genuine?

Some are, many aren't: students, other suppliers, price-shoppers and occasional scams. Screen every enquiry for a real company, a specific requirement and a reachable decision-maker before sending samples or prices.

Should I rely on marketplaces alone?

Rarely. Marketplaces bring inbound enquiries, but you sit next to competing suppliers and compete on price. Most exporters combine them with direct outreach to buyers they've chosen.
